Since the 1950’s, a lot of jade dealers came & gathered in Canton Road (the section in between Jordan Road to Saigon Street). In those years, jade was not only traded in the shop. There had a lot of jade stalls doing business on walking-sideway outside the shops, too. With the jade shops and stalls, this place was slowing formed in to a major jade market. And for easy management, jade dealers put their jade processing workshop in the nearby building, and so created a raw jade, jade wholesale trading center in Canton Road. Up until late 1990’s, Canton Road has supply more than 80% of the world jade raw stones and jade finishing goods.

Hong Kong Jade Association has been established by a group of passion jade merchants in 1974 aiming at helping each other, and united the industry. At first the association was named as Jadeware Traders Industry and Commerce Association, then in 2007 changed to Hong Kong Jade Association, a name which more appropriately represents our role and region. And our mission has never been changed.

In the recent year, to enhance our Chinese jade culture in Canton Road, and makes it one of the special streets for Hong Kong tourism. So in 2005, we submitted our application to the government. Our plan is to name Canton Road (a section in between Jordan Road and Kansu Street) as Jade Street. In the same year, the government approved our plan and officially named the road as Jade Street, and slab-paved the words “JADE STREET” in Chinese and English on the pavement.

In 2009, the Hong Kong Jade Association spent a fortune to buy a giant jade stone, which weighing nearly 4 tons and country of origin is from Burma, and placed it at the junction of Canton Road and Jordan Road as a landmark for Jade Street. Everyday, lot of tourists come & visit Jade Street, and take pictures of the giant jade stone.
